Introduction

The EPA's Radiation Protection division is responsible for regulating the use of ionising radiation in medical, research, industrial and mining organisations, including use of X-rays, and the safe transport, storage and disposal of radioactive substances.

This division also advises on radiation safety of non-ionising radiation sources, including lasers, microwaves, powerlines, mobile phones and communication towers.

Structure

The Radiation Protection division of the EPA has five sections:

  • Radiation Health Group
  • Mining and Environment Group
  • Diagnostic X-rays Group
  • Laboratory and Technical Services
  • Administrative Group

Radiation Protection Committee

The Radiation Protection Committee (the Committee) is an expert advisory body established under section 9 of the Radiation Protection and Control Act 1982 (the Act).

Third Party Testing of Diagnostic X-ray Apparatus

From 15 June 2009 third party testing of Diagnostic X-ray apparatus will be possible in South Australia. While initially limited to compliance testing of plain dental X-ray apparatus, the Third Party Certification program will allow owners of apparatus to engage the services of accredited testers to perform compliance tests as a prerequisite to apparatus registration.

Follow the link for further details on the Third Party Certification program.

New Regulations for cosmetic tanning units

Regulations have been passed to protect South Australians from the harmful effects of UV radiation emitted by cosmetic tanning units. From 14 March 2008, tanning unit owners and operators must abide by the Australian Standard, and comply with other requirements. From 1 March 2009, any person who operates a tanning unit must be licensed.

Follow the link for further details on cosmetic tanning unit regulations.

Radiation facts

UV radiation

Ultraviolet (UV) radiation is part of the electromagnetic spectrum emitted by the sun; it has high energy and is non-visible. UV radiation consists of three categories, UVA, UVB and UVC.

Follow the link for more information on Sunburn and UV radiation.

Mobile phones

Since the introduction of mobile phones to Australia, there have been concerns regarding their effect on human health.

In response, Radiation Protection has prepared background information and answers some common questions.

Follow the link for more information on mobile phones.

Mobile phone base stations

The rapid expansion of cellular mobile telephone networks has resulted in increasing numbers of mobile phone base stations, also known as mobile phone towers.

In response to concerns about the effect of electromagnetic radiation on human health, Radiation Protection has prepared background information and answers some common questions.

Follow the link for more information on mobile phone base stations.

Powerlines

Electromagnetic fields are associated with anything that produces, carries or is powered by electricity. Radiation Protection has prepared answers to some valid questions concerning safe levels of exposure to fields generated by high voltage powerlines and other electrical and magnetic sources.

Follow the link for more information on powerlines.
